Watching Greek language films with English subtitles is a great way to improve your Greek listening skills. You should also pick up some new Greek vocabulary and even some Greek slang or swear words
I’ve also found watching Greek films helps me understand Greece, Greek culture and even Greek history.
However finding Greek films with English subtitles is not that easy, therefore we created this page. We have curated a list below as well as a playlist on YouTube
Another good source of Greek movies, often with English subtitles although you will need to check first, is Viva Streaming. You will need to buy a ticket but they are very cheap, usually 4 or 5 euros.
Bookmark this page and check back later as we will be adding more films as and when we find them.
The Other Me (Έτερος Εγώ) | 2016 | 1h 39m | Directed by Sotiris Tsafoulias
This is perhaps the most highly rated and widely distributed Greek movie of recent years. It has subsequently been made into a mini series, which is rumoured to be coming to Netflix soon, so hopefully we will be able to watch the mini series with English subtitles!
You can read more about the movie here on IMDB.
Little England (Μικρά Αγγλία) | 2013 | 2h 33m | Directed by Pantelis Voulgaris
Family Member | 2015 | 1h 44m | Directed by Marinos Kartikkis.
Family Member is a Cypriot rather than Greek movie and as such the Greek language that you will hear in this movie is slightly different to mainland Greece. There are some different pronunciations as well as some different vocabulary but generally if you know some Greek you will recognise some of the dialogue.
Despite this it was a good listening exercise and the film itself has an interesting story and highlights some of the issues that have faced Greece/Cyprus in recent years.
